About Me

Welcome! I’m Anna, a nomadic storyteller with an appetite for adventure and a passion for social justice and sustainability. Hence why I backpacked around the globe solo, traveled in a tiny home on wheels for 4 years, and now I’m based out of a small off-grid house building a sustainable farmstead.

I’m not sure why the closed captions got messed up at the end, but maybe it’s the universe’s way of reminding me that dogs REALLY do make life better.
I couldn’t sleep last night. I tossed and turned I couldn’t sleep last night. I tossed and turned, thoughts, feelings and wishes tumbled through my mind about the state of the world, and where I fall into all the chaos. Then I woke up and heard this song, and it struck a chord. The first time I heard it, I cried. And I just thought I’d share it in case anyone else needed these feels today 💛
We are slowly building a glampground on our 5 acre We are slowly building a glampground on our 5 acres of off grid land, but our bell tent flooded this weekend, and then it started raining while we were fixing the rope lines. But, better this happens now and we fix all the kinks before we have guests. 🏕
This is a lesson I’ve been trying to adopt my wh This is a lesson I’ve been trying to adopt my whole life, but it has suddenly become more relevant in the last few months as some relationships in my life have shifted. It’s natural to want answers when someone lets you down. But honestly, often times the answers that make sense for someone else, might not give you what you need. So it’s up to you to make peace with things, even if they don’t add up, even if they fall so wildly short of your expectations, and it just plain hurts. All you can do, is control how you show up for people, and maybe that energy will be matched. But if it’s not, allow space for things to just be as they are.

I’ve been searching for some constellation of le I’ve been searching for some constellation of letters that could properly convey my thoughts. Some analysis that could make sense of the senseless. The pain that flows through me as I absorb the news is often too much to bear. So I escape instead. I’ve grown skilled at this. I used to need to board a plane and travel thousands of miles across the globe. Now I live in a reality a few degrees removed from society, and escaping is as easy as turning my phone on airplane mode.

My goals now are to stay sane, lower my impact on this planet, and inspire others to do the same. I engage in activism and service in more discreet ways. I know that there is so much privilege wrapped up in my escapism.

But I also know that I’ve tried. I had huge dreams, hope, good intentions, and determination. I got degrees in things I thought would arm me with skills that would enable me to help people. I got jobs that I thought would do the same. But it became clear that my mind was revolting against my body. I couldn’t stomach things that others seemingly could, and the ulcers lining my GI tract proved that. Maybe it was the childhood traumas my body carried into adulthood, or maybe the traumas I endured in adulthood. Maybe it was the harassment I endured from male bosses, or the egos that seemed to get in the way of the mission. Maybe it was the state of the country that a piece of paper connects my citizenship to. Maybe it was the realization that saviorism might have been tangled up in the work I had done. All I know is, it all became too heavy.

I needed to build a life outside of the noise, the chaos, and the crazy. In doing so, I realized both that it’s not easy to go against the grain of society, but also, once you do, everything becomes more clear.

Between climate change, war, violence, structural inequality, corruption, and unbridled capitalism, I don’t know what this world has in store. What's clear is that pain begets pain. Chaos begets chaos. The planet and the universe will go on without us. We are mere ants on a mountain. But maybe, we can change course. Afterall, ants have adapted to work so well together towards a common purpose that they behave like a single organism.
18 sunrises and moonrises in the canyon, without a 18 sunrises and moonrises in the canyon, without a roof over my head. The gritty sensation of sand between my toes, grinding calluses on my fingertips, matting my hair and scalp. The freedom of sleeping under the stars with big horn sheep, great blue herons, wolf spiders, red ants and coachwhip snakes will be embedded as projections in my eyelids as I close them each night. A symphony of rapids, frogs and crickets will replay in my eardrums. The Colorado River’s strength and determination will live in my bones. The adrenaline of swimming in the Killer Fang and Gneiss rapids alongside a flipped duckie will flow through my veins, and my GoPro that now lives in the river, will carry the story. Likewise, the serenity of floating in Havasu Creek’s clear blue travertine deposits will calm my nerves and the conversations about life and the pursuit of happiness with strangers will rest peacefully in my heart. The soreness of my legs as they carried me down South Kaibab Trail, and the fresh canyon perspectives at every turn will serve to remind me of balance. The thrill of climbing steep side canyons and bathing in waterfalls and river banks will blossom as a core memory and I will forever cherish the days spent with my mom in a place that I’ve grown to know crevices of intimately in different chapters of my life.

We get our water a few ways: hauling, rain water c We get our water a few ways: hauling, rain water collection, and recycling grey water from our laundry machine, but the main way, by far is from hauling it from a nearby community well. Fortunately, that water is tested regularly and so we are confident it is clean. Even so, we still periodically add a little bleach to our underground cistern where our water is stored, and we have a whole house 3 stage sediment and carbon filter, and then an additional tankless reverse osmosis filter for our drinking water.
